Overall Job Purpose:
- To lead and manage the Teaching Experience portfolio on all of campuses across the Faculty of Education programmes. This will also entail the management of academic development for select modules within the School, in consultation and collaboration with the Dean. Coupled with this will be the management of the logistical arrangement of school-based/Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre Work Integrated Learning and the facilitation of student placements through the support of the campus Teaching Experience Co-ordinators. The leadership and guidance provided by this role will further ensure that innovative teaching practice strategies meet both national and international trends. The Teaching Experience Manager will also ensure that all minimum requirements for teacher education qualifications are adhered to, and that the recording and tracking of all placements are monitored to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Develops and implements the strategic plan for Teaching Experience for the School of Education in conjunction with the long-term vision of institution as a quality higher education provider.
- Provides logistical management for the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component of all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the School.
- Reviews and implements changes to the curriculum of existing Teaching Experience modules on all Faculty of Education programmes in collaboration with the Senior Lecturer/Lecturer team.
- Develops and drives the implementation of relevant teaching and learning initiatives within the school-based WIL cognate area based on current industry and research trends.
- Plans resource allocation for all aspects of running a successful WIL programme.
- Supports and develops the national and campus Teaching Experience teams to ensure compliance with curriculum imperatives.
- Actively teaches to serve as an exemplar in best teaching practice including scholarly activities such as setting and marking of assessments.
- Reports on students’ learning analytics in terms of academic results, throughput rates, progression rates, graduation and completion rates on a national basis and ensures the appropriate interventions are implemented where necessary.
- Manages the academic development for select modules within the School of Education, in consultation and collaboration with ACE.
- Reviews, develops and implements the curriculum and syllabus for the selected programmes or modules.
- Acts as the interface between the Faculty and Faculty Managers in relation to the Teaching Experience modules.
- Identifies and briefs module developers in collaboration with ACE team as required.
- Assists in the identification of external moderators in collaboration with the Dean.
- Assists in the identification of internal reviewers for all modules within the Faculty of Education.
- Performs a high level review of academic development for modules within the Faculty.
- Participates in key governance structures and committees such as; the Programme Co-ordination
- Committee, Faculty Boards, Academic Planning & Development Committee, Examinations Committee, Brands Results, Postgraduate & Research committee etc.
- Holds the Brand Ambassador role for Teaching Experience to external stakeholders in the profession and is responsible for partnership building.
- Develops and maintains relationships within industry in the profession which includes industry placement of students, sponsorships and professional expertise.
- Contributes towards and drives the Academic positioning of the Faculty of Education professional training and development for the world of work.
- Facilitates and is involved in professional and scholarly activities for e.g. Conference Papers and Higher Degree Studies.
- Serves as the key liaison with professional and academic partners in the cognate area.
- Represents the institution on external partner faculty boards, committees and professional bodies.
- Facilitates compliance with partners and provider's policies, regulations and procedures.
- Provides thought leadership in terms of opinion pieces written and published in media to build academic credibility in the wider South African society/community.
- Design and manage research projects that inform institutional decision-making.
- Compile reports and disseminate findings to leadership and academic forums.
- Works with the campus Teaching Experience Co-ordinators and supports the development of these roles across all campuses
- Implements a formal communication structure within the Faculty of Education, at a campus level through the Teaching Experience Co-ordinators.
- Supports the campuses in the recruitment, selection, approval and development of the teaching team in the cognate area and approves all lecturer allocations per module.
- Communicates with the campuses on new developments, recommendations and trends and facilitates troubleshooting.
- Supports the campus in the operation of a bursary programme sponsored by industry where possible.
Minimum Educational Requirement:
- Master's Degree (NQF Level 9) in Education,
- PHD (NQF Level 10) preferred
- Teaching and Learning experience (preferably in Higher Education teaching environment).
