Postgraduate and/or Research-based programmes

Purpose of the Role

The Research Supervisor is responsible for providing high-quality academic supervision, guidance, and assessment support to postgraduate students undertaking research projects. The role ensures that students are supported to meet academic, ethical, and institutional research standards within prescribed timelines.

Key Responsibilities

The Research Supervisor will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Providing individualised research supervision and academic support to assigned students.
  • Guiding students through all phases of the research process, including proposal development, literature review, methodology, analysis, and final submission.
  • Evaluating and assessing student research work in accordance with institutional assessment criteria and policies.
  • Delivering comprehensive, constructive, and timely written feedback on drafts and final submissions.
  • Overseeing all required academic guidance, support, and assessment activities related to student research projects.
  • Submitting assessment results and reports in line with institutional procedures, guidelines, and deadlines.
  • Ensuring adherence to academic ethics, including research integrity, ethical clearance processes, and the prevention of plagiarism.
  • Upholding the standards and requirements of the supervisor–student relationship as outlined in relevant research and postgraduate policies.
  • Participating in supervisor training, assessment standardisation meetings, academic workshops, and relevant campus or online events.
  • Serving, where required, on academic or ethics committees.
  • Responding to student academic queries via official communication platforms (e.g. email or the Learning Management System).
  • Complying with all institutional policies, procedures, and quality assurance requirements.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant academic discipline.
  • Sound knowledge of academic research methodologies and ethics.

 

Ideal Requirements

  • A Doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field.
  • Previous experience supervising postgraduate research at honours or postgraduate diploma level or higher.
  • Experience working within higher education quality assurance and research governance frameworks.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong academic writing, editing, and feedback skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple students and deadlines effectively.
  • High level of academic integrity and ethical awareness.
  • Proficiency in online learning platforms and digital communication tools.

  • Ability to adhere to rules and strictly follow work regulations.
  • Deadline orientated and can work well under pressure.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.

Working Hours:

Classes are scheduled from 08h00am until 17h00pm, Monday to Friday. Your working hours will depend on the modules allocated to you. 

Salary:

Market related.
